Research Council World Economy and Finance Programme and the the Australian Research Council Governance Research Network. It draws together a variety of different perspectives on the international financial crisis which began in August 2007 and later turned into a more widespread economic crisis following the collapse of Lehman Brothers in the autumn of 2008. Spring 2009 was in many respects the nadir since valuations in financial markets had reached their low point and crisis management rather than regulatory reform was the main focus of attention. The conference and book were deliberately framed as an attempt to re-focus attention from the former to the latter.<o:p></o:p></span></p> <p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0cm;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height: normal'><span lang=EN-GB style='font-size:5.0pt;font-family:"Gill Sans MT","sans-serif"; mso-ansi-language:EN-GB'><o:p>&nbsp;</o:p></span></p> <p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0cm;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height: normal'><span lang=EN-GB style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman","serif"; mso-ansi-language:EN-GB'>The first part of the book focuses on the context of the crisis, discussing the general characteristics of financial crises and the specific influences that were at work this time round. The second part focuses more specifically on regulatory techniques and practices implicated in the crisis, noting in particular an over-reliance on the capacity of regulators and financial institutions to manage risk and on the capacity of markets to self-correct. The third part focuses on the role of governance and ethics in the crisis and in particular the need for a common ethical framework to underpin governance practices and to provide greater clarity in the design of accountability mechanisms.&nbsp; The final part focuses on the trajectory of regulatory reform, noting the considerable potential for change as a result of the role of the state in the rescue and recuperation of the financial system and stressing the need for fundamental re-appraisal of business and regulatory models.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <o:p></o:p></span></p> <p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0cm;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height: normal'><span lang=EN-GB style='font-size:5.0pt;font-family:"Gill Sans MT","sans-serif"; mso-ansi-language:EN-GB'><o:p>&nbsp;</o:p></span></p> <p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0cm;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height: normal'><b><i><span lang=EN-GB style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman","serif"; mso-ansi-language:EN-GB'>Iain G MacNeil</span></i></b><i><span lang=EN-GB style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman","serif";mso-ansi-language: EN-GB'> is the Alexander Stone Professor of Commercial Law at the University of Glasgow. <o:p></o:p></span></i></p> <p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0cm;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height: normal'><b><i><span lang=EN-GB style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman","serif"; mso-ansi-language:EN-GB'>Justin O'Brien</span></i></b><i><span lang=EN-GB style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman","serif";mso-ansi-language: EN-GB'> is a Professor of Law at the University of New South Wales, Sydney.</span></i><b><i><span lang=EN-GB style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Gill Sans MT","sans-serif"; mso-ansi-language:EN-GB'><o:p></o:p></span></i></b></p> <p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0cm;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height: normal'><span lang=EN-GB style='font-size:5.0pt;font-family:"Gill Sans MT","sans-serif"; mso-ansi-language:EN-GB'><o:p>&nbsp;</o:p></span></p> <p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0cm;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height: normal'><span lang=EN-GB style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Gill Sans MT","sans-serif"; mso-ansi-language:EN-GB'>Mar 2010&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 488pp&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Pbk&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 9781841139104&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; £50 / ¬ 65 <o:p></o:p></span></p> <p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0cm;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height: normal'><span lang=EN-GB style='font-family:"Gill Sans MT","sans-serif"; mso-ansi-language:EN-GB'><a href="http://www.hartpub.co.uk/books/details.asp?isbn=9781841139104">Click here for further details</a></span><span lang=EN-GB style='font-size:10.0pt; font-family:"Gill Sans MT","sans-serif";mso-ansi-language:EN-GB'><o:p></o:p></span></p> <p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0cm;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height: normal'><span lang=EN-GB style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Gill Sans MT","sans-serif"; mso-ansi-language:EN-GB'><o:p>&nbsp;</o:p></span></p> <p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0cm;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height: normal'><span lang=EN-GB style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Arial Narrow","sans-serif"; mso-ansi-language:EN-GB'><o:p>&nbsp;</o:p></span></p> <p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0cm;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height: normal'><b><span lang=EN-GB style='font-size:14.0pt;font-family:BakerSignet; mso-ansi-language:EN-GB'>Legitimacy in EU Cartel Control</span></b><b><span lang=EN-GB style='font-size:8.5pt;font-family:"MS Sans Serif";mso-ansi-language: EN-GB'><o:p></o:p></span></b></p> <p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0cm;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height: normal'><i><span lang=EN-GB style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:AGaramond; mso-ansi-language:EN-GB'>Ingeborg Simonsson</span></i><span lang=EN-GB style='font-size:8.5pt;font-family:"MS Sans Serif";mso-ansi-language:EN-GB'><o:p></o:p></span></p> <p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0cm;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height: normal'><span lang=EN-GB style='font-size:5.0pt;font-family:"Gill Sans MT","sans-serif"; mso-ansi-language:EN-GB'><o:p>&nbsp;</o:p></span></p> <p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0cm;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height: normal'><span lang=EN-GB style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman","serif"; mso-ansi-language:EN-GB'>This book examines the law developed by the EU to control cartels. The law, including case-law, is carefully documented and analysed against a standard of legitimacy which questions the EU's enforcement measures, its institutional structures, policy choices, substantive law, evidentiary standards and procedures and sanctions. It includes a unique catalogue of over 150 EU cartel decisions, as well as novel analyses of difficult borderline issues such as mixed horizontal and vertical cartels, single-brand dealer cartels and buyer cartels. The effect on trade in cartel cases is analysed with reference to established law and deterrence theory. Throughout the book the author asks whether EU law also applies at the national level, or whether certain assessments need to be made according to national law. This approach makes the book particularly helpful for national authorities, courts and private practitioners. The book includes in-depth comparisons with US law as well as a comprehensive survey of the secondary (academic) literature on cartels. As such it presents not only a comprehensive practical view, but also a sound theoretical framework for better understanding cartel law. This is a work which will be of utmost importance to those working in competition authorities and competition courts in the EU Member States, as well as those working for EU institutions and in private practice and academia.<o:p></o:p></span></p> <p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0cm;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height: normal'><span lang=EN-GB style='font-size:5.0pt;font-family:"Gill Sans MT","sans-serif"; mso-ansi-language:EN-GB'><o:p>&nbsp;</o:p></span></p> <p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0cm;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height: normal'><b><i><span lang=EN-GB style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman","serif"; mso-ansi-language:EN-GB'>Ingeborg Simonsson</span></i></b><i><span lang=EN-GB style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman","serif";mso-ansi-language: EN-GB'> is one of Sweden's leading experts in competition law. The casebook covers the big legal families in the EU and contains judgments from the supreme courts and other courts of the Member States. In view of the importance of EC legislation (eg harmonisation directives and regulations) in this field, the consumer law casebook contains much material derived from Community law, such as extracts from directives (eg on unfair contract terms, distance selling, doorstep selling, product liability, unfair commercial pratices etc) and judgments of the ECJ and national court decisions. Furthermore, attention is paid to the way in which, when interpreting EC directives in the consumer field, the ECJ refers to concepts common to the legal systems of the Member States and how the courts of the Member States incorporate the concepts found in the directives (as interpreted by the ECJ) in their legal systems. The casebook also compares harmonised and pre-harmonised law, especially in the case law of the Member States. The casebook concentrates on private law in the field of consumer protection but also addresses topics, in particular in the field of enforcement, that are primarily a matter of public law.<o:p></o:p></span></p> <p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0cm;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height: normal'><span lang=EN-GB style='font-size:5.0pt;font-family:"Gill Sans MT","sans-serif"; It is the third volume in a series of collected essays on landmark cases (the previous two volumes having dealt with <a href="http://www.hartpub.co.uk/books/details.asp?isbn=9781841135885">restitution</a> and <a href="http://www.hartpub.co.uk/books/details.asp?isbn=9781841137599">contract</a>). The cases examined raise a broad range of important issues across the law of tort, including such diverse areas as acts of state and public nuisance, as well as central questions relating to the tort of negligence. Several of the essays place cases in their historical context in ways that change our understanding of the case's significance. It is to further such discussion that some of the author's previously published writings around this subject have been brought together in this book. His basic premises are that contractual obligation and liability in this context are two sides to the same coin and that an assumption of one is an assumption of both. Parties are bound not because liability has been imposed upon them by law as a result of their having entered into a contract but because, in the act of assuming, they have imposed it upon themselves. Contract provides a facility the purpose of which is to enable this to be done within the limits prescribed by law. The implication of these premises are much more significant than might be supposed when applied to such areas of contract as formation, consideration, intention to contract, exception clauses, privity and damages. The book concludes with a treatment of the role of assumption in tort.<o:p></o:p></span></p> <p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0cm;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height: normal'><span lang=EN-GB style='font-size:5.0pt;font-family:"Gill Sans MT","sans-serif"; mso-ansi-language:EN-GB'><o:p>&nbsp;</o:p></span></p> <p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0cm;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height: normal'><span lang=EN-GB style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman","serif"; mso-ansi-language:EN-GB'>Because of the importance of its subject matter and its wide-ranging treatment, this book should appeal not only to teachers and postgraduate students of contract but also to practitioners in the field and to anyone else with an interest in contract theory.<o:p></o:p></span></p> <p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0cm;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height: normal'><span lang=EN-GB style='font-size:5.0pt;font-family:"Gill Sans MT","sans-serif"; mso-ansi-language:EN-GB'><o:p>&nbsp;</o:p></span></p> <p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0cm;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height: normal'><b><i><span lang=EN-GB style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman","serif"; mso-ansi-language:EN-GB'>Brian Coote,</span></i></b><i><span lang=EN-GB style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman","serif";mso-ansi-language: EN-GB'> CBE, FNZAH, FRSNZ is an Emeritus Professor and sometime Dean of Law at the University of Auckland, and has published widely on Contract topics<o:p></o:p></span></i></p> <p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0cm;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height: normal'><b><i><span lang=EN-GB style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman","serif"; mso-ansi-language:EN-GB'>Rick Bigwood</span></i></b><i><span lang=EN-GB style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman","serif";mso-ansi-language: EN-GB'> is Professor of Law at the University of Auckland and Director of the Research Centre for Business Law.<o:p></o:p></span></i></p> <p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0cm;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height: normal'><span lang=EN-GB style='font-size:5.0pt;font-family:"Gill Sans MT","sans-serif"; mso-ansi-language:EN-GB'><o:p>&nbsp;</o:p></span></p> <p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0cm;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height: normal'><span lang=EN-GB style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Gill Sans MT","sans-serif"; mso-ansi-language:EN-GB'>April 2010&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 246pp&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Hbk&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 9781849460293&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; £40 / ¬ 52<span style='color:maroon'> <o:p></o:p></span></span></p> <p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0cm;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height: normal'><span lang=EN-GB style='font-family:"Gill Sans MT","sans-serif"; mso-ansi-language:EN-GB'><a href="http://www.hartpub.co.uk/books/details.asp?isbn=9781849460293">Click here for further details</a></span><span lang=EN-GB style='font-size:10.0pt; font-family:"Gill Sans MT","sans-serif";mso-ansi-language:EN-GB'><o:p></o:p></span></p> <p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0cm;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height: normal'><span lang=EN-GB style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Gill Sans MT","sans-serif"; mso-ansi-language:EN-GB'><o:p>&nbsp;</o:p></span></p> <p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0cm;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height: normal'><span lang=EN-GB style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Arial Narrow","sans-serif"; mso-ansi-language:EN-GB'><o:p>&nbsp;</o:p></span></p> <p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0cm;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height: normal'><b><span lang=EN-GB style='font-size:14.0pt;font-family:BakerSignet; mso-ansi-language:EN-GB'>Copyright Law and the Public Interest in the Nineteenth Century</span></b><b><span lang=EN-GB style='font-size:8.5pt; font-family:"MS Sans Serif";mso-ansi-language:EN-GB'><o:p></o:p></span></b></p> <p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0cm;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height: normal'><i><span lang=EN-GB style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:AGaramond; mso-ansi-language:EN-GB'>Isabella Alexander</span></i><span lang=EN-GB style='font-size:8.5pt;font-family:"MS Sans Serif";mso-ansi-language:EN-GB'><o:p></o:p></span></p> <p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0cm;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height: normal'><span lang=EN-GB style='font-size:5.0pt;font-family:"Gill Sans MT","sans-serif"; mso-ansi-language:EN-GB'><o:p>&nbsp;</o:p></span></p> <p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0cm;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height: normal'><span lang=EN-GB style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman","serif"; mso-ansi-language:EN-GB'>Copyright law is commonly described as carrying out a balancing act between the interests of authors or owners and those of the public.&nbsp; While much academic work, both historical and contemporary, has been done on the authorship side of the equation, this book examines the notion of public interest, and the way that concepts of public interest and the rhetoric surrounding it have been involved in shaping the law of copyright. While many histories of copyright focus on the eighteenth century, this book's main concern is with the period after 1774. The nineteenth century was the period during which the boundaries of copyright, as we know it today, were drawn and ideas of  public interest were integral to this process, but in different, and complex, ways. The book engages with this complexity by moving beyond debates about the appropriate duration of copyright, and considers the development of other important features of copyright law, such as the requirement of legal deposit, the principle that some works will not be subject to copyright protection on the grounds of public interest, and the law of infringement.&nbsp; While the focus of the book is on literary copyright, it also traces the expansion of copyright to cover new subject matters, such as music, dramatic works and lectures. The book concludes by examining the making of the 1911 Imperial Copyright Act  the statute upon which the law of copyright in Britain, and in all former British colonies, is based. The history traced in this book has considerable relevance to debates over the scope of copyright law in the present day; it emphasises the contingency and complexity of copyright law's development and current shape, as well as encouraging a critical approach to the justifications for copyright law.<o:p></o:p></span></p> <p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0cm;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height: normal'><span lang=EN-GB style='font-size:5.0pt;font-family:"Gill Sans MT","sans-serif"; mso-ansi-language:EN-GB'><o:p>&nbsp;</o:p></span></p> <p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0cm;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height: normal'><b><i><span lang=EN-GB style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman","serif"; mso-ansi-language:EN-GB'>Dr Isabella Alexander</span></i></b><i><span lang=EN-GB style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman","serif"; mso-ansi-language:EN-GB'> is a Newton Trust Lecturer at the Faculty of Law, University of Cambridge, Beachcroft LLP Fellow in Law and Director of Studies in Law at Robinson College, Cambridge.<o:p></o:p></span></i></p> <p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0cm;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height: normal'><span lang=EN-GB style='font-size:5.0pt;font-family:"Gill Sans MT","sans-serif"; mso-ansi-language:EN-GB'><o:p>&nbsp;</o:p></span></p> <p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0cm;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height: normal'><span lang=EN-GB style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Gill Sans MT","sans-serif"; mso-ansi-language:EN-GB'>March 2010&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 344pp&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;Hbk&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 9781841137865&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;£55 / ¬ 71.50 <span style='color:maroon'><o:p></o:p></span></span></p> <p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0cm;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height: normal'><span lang=EN-GB style='font-family:"Gill Sans MT","sans-serif"; mso-ansi-language:EN-GB'><a href="http://www.hartpub.co.uk/books/details.asp?isbn=9781841137865">Click here for further details</a></span><span lang=EN-GB style='font-size:10.0pt; font-family:"Gill Sans MT","sans-serif";mso-ansi-language:EN-GB'><o:p></o:p></span></p> <p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0cm;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height: normal'><span lang=EN-GB style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Gill Sans MT","sans-serif"; mso-ansi-language:EN-GB'><o:p>&nbsp;</o:p></span></p> <p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0cm;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height: normal'><span lang=EN-GB style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Arial Narrow","sans-serif"; mso-ansi-language:EN-GB'><o:p>&nbsp;</o:p></span></p> <p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0cm;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height: normal'><b><span lang=EN-GB style='font-size:14.0pt;font-family:BakerSignet; mso-ansi-language:EN-GB'>Nuclear Law&nbsp;&nbsp; </span></b><b><span lang=EN-GB style='color:#C00000;mso-ansi-language:EN-GB'>Second Edition</span></b><b><span lang=EN-GB style='font-size:16.0pt;font-family:"MS Sans Serif";mso-ansi-language: EN-GB'><o:p></o:p></span></b></p> <p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0cm;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height: normal'><span lang=EN-GB style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Gill Sans MT","sans-serif"; mso-ansi-language:EN-GB'>The Law Applying to Nuclear Installations and Radioactive Substances in its Historic Context</span><span lang=EN-GB style='font-size:15.0pt;font-family:"Gill Sans MT","sans-serif";mso-ansi-language: EN-GB'><o:p></o:p></span></p> <p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0cm;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height: normal'><i><span lang=EN-GB style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:AGaramond; mso-ansi-language:EN-GB'>Stephen Tromans QC</span></i><span lang=EN-GB style='font-size:8.5pt;font-family:"MS Sans Serif";mso-ansi-language:EN-GB'><o:p></o:p></span></p> <p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0cm;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height: normal'><span lang=EN-GB style='font-size:5.0pt;font-family:"Gill Sans MT","sans-serif"; mso-ansi-language:EN-GB'><o:p>&nbsp;</o:p></span></p> <p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0cm;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height: normal'><span lang=EN-GB style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman","serif"; mso-ansi-language:EN-GB'>This book is a practical guide to the international, EC and UK law applying to the various uses of nuclear energy and radioactive substances. It will cover the law relating to the permitting and operation of nuclear power stations, the decommissioning and clean-up of former nuclear facilities, radiological protection, the management of radioactive waste and spent fuel, liability and insurance, and the security and transport of radioactive materials. Readers will find a clear framework explaining the development and application of nuclear law, and how domestic law is based on and influenced by international and European requirements and by its historical context.&nbsp; In the commercial context, the chapters dealing specifically with new build and with decommissioning will be vital reading.<o:p></o:p></span></p> <p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0cm;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height: normal'><span lang=EN-GB style='font-size:5.0pt;font-family:"Gill Sans MT","sans-serif"; mso-ansi-language:EN-GB'><o:p>&nbsp;</o:p></span></p> <p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0cm;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height: normal'><b><i><span lang=EN-GB style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman","serif"; mso-ansi-language:EN-GB'>Stephen Tromans QC</span></i></b><i><span lang=EN-GB style='font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman","serif";mso-ansi-language: EN-GB'> is a barrister specialising in environmental, planning and energy law, and has had an interest in nuclear matters for over 20 years. The contributors are leading feminist socio-legal scholars from a range of disciplines in Canada, the United States and Israel.&nbsp; Collectively, their analyses of women, law and poverty speak to long-standing and ongoing feminist concerns:&nbsp; the importance of historically informed research, the relevance of women's agency and resistance to the experience of inequality and injustice, the specificity of the experience of poor women and poor mothers, the implications of changes to social policy, and the possibilities for social change.&nbsp; Such analyses are particularly timely as the devastation of neo-liberalism becomes increasingly obvious.&nbsp; The current world crisis of capitalism is a defining moment for liberal states  a global catastrophe that concomitantly creates a window of opportunity for critical scholars and activists to reframe debates about social welfare, work, and equality, and to reinsert the discourse of social justice into the public consciousness and political agendae of liberal democracies.<o:p></o:p></span></p> <p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:0cm;margin-bottom:.0001pt;line-height: normal'><span lang=EN-GB style='font-size:5.0pt;font-family:"Gill Sans MT","sans-serif";
